| element | a matter that is made up of only one kind of atom |
| neutron | neutral subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom |
| proton | positive charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom |
| electron | negative charged subatomic particle that orbits the nucleus in energy levels |
| atom | the smallest part of an element that is still the element |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| chemical change | a change that results in an entirely new substance with different properties |
| physical change | a change in matter that does not change the chemical composition of the matter - different shape, heating, cooling, melting, freezing |
| magnetic | able to be attracted by a magnet |
| conductivity | a substance's capability of transmitting light, heat, electricity, or sound |
| substance | something made up of only one material such as water |
| properties | physical or chemical characteristics of matter used to describe or identify a substance |
