What was the main purpose of the Freedmen's Bureau? To help African Americans adjust to life as free people
The Freedmen's Bureau provided all of these EXCEPT: Voting rights
Why did sharecropping begin? Because landowners wanted cheap workers
In the sharecropping system, what did landowners provide? Land, tools, and housing
What was the main problem with sharecropping? It kept sharecroppers in poverty
What were Jim Crow laws designed to do? Limit the rights of African Americans
What does "segregate" mean in the context of Jim Crow laws? To separate people from each other
What does "discriminate" mean? To treat people unfairly because of skin color
What did sharecroppers have to give to landowners? Their labor, most of their crops, and most of their income (money)
What does "disenfranchise" mean? To deny voting rights
The 14th Amendment required states to: Protect all citizens equally
Who was NOT included in the 15th Amendment's voting rights? American Indians and women
What were the three goals of Jim Crow laws? Segregate, discriminate, and disenfranchise
Under sharecropping, landowners provided all EXCEPT: Labor
