Landmark Court Cases

QuestionAnswer
Marbury v. Madison (1803) Established judicial review, giving the Supreme Court the power to declare laws unconstitutional.
McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) Confirmed federal supremacy and allowed implied powers under the Necessary and Proper Clause.
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) Upheld racial segregation and created the “separate but equal” doctrine.
Brown v. Board of Education (1954) Overturned Plessy; ruled that segregated schools are inherently unequal and unconstitutional.
Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) Guaranteed the right to an attorney for defendants who cannot afford one.
Miranda v. Arizona (1966) Required police to inform suspects of their rights, including the right to remain silent and an attorney (Miranda rights).
Tinker v. Des Moines (1969) Protected students’ free speech at school as long as it doesn’t cause disruption.
New Jersey v. T.L.O. (1985) Schools can search students with reasonable suspicion, lowering the standard from probable cause.
