Sun The source of energy for all living things
Producer An organism that must create its own energy through photosynthesis
Photosynthesis A process used by plants to make their own energy
Oxygen A gas used by animals to breathe and given off by plants during photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide A gas exhaled by animals and taken in by plants
Carnivore An organism that consumes only other animals; meat-eater
Consumer An organism that must eat other organisms to obtain energy
Decomposer An organism responsible for breaking down dead plants and animals and returning the nutrients to the soil
Ecosystem The interaction of all the living and nonliving things in an environment
Environment All the living and nonliving things in an area
Food Chain A model used to show a single path energy takes as it moves through an ecosystem
Food Web A model used to show multiple paths energy takes as it moves through an ecosystem
Herbivore An organism that consumes only plants for energy; planteater
Omnivore An organism that consumes both plants and animals for energy; plant- and meat-eater
Organism A living thing
Predator An animal that preys on and eats other animals
Prey An animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal
Abiotic A factor in the environment that has no basic needs and was never alive
Biotic Something that requires basic needs and is alive
Community Populations of different species in an area that interact
Environment All the living and nonliving things in an area
Population A group of organisms of the same species in the same area that interact
