Convenience sampling Non-probability sampling Selecting sample from population because it is convenient and available to investigator Teachers asking their students to participate in survey
Quota sampling Non-probability sampling Researchers identify mutually selective subgroups within the population and recruit samples from those subgroups. Specify Race, Economic class, Disease state
Purposive Sampling Non-probability sampling Researchers ask subjects to participate based on knowledge and understanding of research. Pharmacists asking other pharmacist
Snowball sampling Non-probability sampling Researchers ask participants they already know to invite other people they know to participate Helpful in hard to track situations (HIV or homeless, IV Drugs)
Sample Random Probability sampling Each subjects has equal opportunity to be elected Random number generator. Computer generated subject selection .
Systematic Sampling Probability sampling Selects subjects at regular intervals from a random point . Population of 4000 patients -> Select every 40th person
Stratified Sampling Probability sampling Divided into relative subgroups and random sample taken from each group. Population divided by age -> 2 patients from each group selected
Cluster sampling Probability sampling Target population is divided into groups/clusters and a randomly selected subsection is the sample. Studying inhabitants of 15 randomly selected towns/cities from NY.
