Symbols, Acid and Alkali
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Acid | has a pH value of less than 7; a strong acid will turn universal indicator red. |
| Alkali | has a pH value of more than 7; a strong alkali will turn universal indicator blue |
| Citric acid | The acid that is commonly found in lemons. |
| Concentrated | A substance is concentrated if it has a high proportion of that substance compared to other substances in the solution. |
| Corrosive | may dissolve or burn through materials |
| Corrosive | These substances can burn through skin, clothing and other tough materials. When spilled tell teacher immediately and start washing off. Use goggles and a lab coat |
| Dilute | A solution is often diluted by the addition of water. |
| Environmental Hazard | Substances that can cause harm to the environment. Special disposal regulations |
| Explosive | It is a chemical compound, mixture or device that explode |
| Flammable | Capable of burning with a flame and sets fire easily |
| Gases under pressure | Gas released may be very cold. Gas container may explode if heated |
| Harmful | can cause general damage |
| Hazard symbols | signs designed to warn of potential dangers. |
| Health hazard | may cause serious health effects, for example to the respiratory tract |
| Hydrochloric acid | A type of acid often used in school science experiments. Its formula is HCl. |
| Hydroxide | OH- |
| Irritant | can cause itching or a rash |
| Moderate hazard | A substance that may cause irritation to the skin, eyes or inside your body. |
| Oxidising | Provides oxygen to make other substances burn more fiercely |
| Soapy | containing or covered with soap |
| Sodium hydroxide | An alkali often used in school science experiments. Its formula is NaOH |
| Sulphuric acid | An acid often used in school science experiments. Its formula is H2SO4 |
| Toxic | These substances can cause death when breathed in, swallowed or absorbed by skin. We will not use these substances. |
