Light

TermDefinition
What does luminous mean? an object that produces light
How do we see a non luminous light We only see a non luminous light when light bounces of it
What are light rays? an imaginary line that represents a beam of light
Why do we hear thunder after we see lightning? Light travels faster than sound
What does transparent mean? Clear or completely see-through.
What does translucent mean? allows some light to pass through
What does opaque mean? Does not allow light to pass.
What is a vacuum? an empty space with no particles and no pressure
Why can light travel through space? It does not need particles
What is the speed of light? 300,000,000 m/s
What is a light year? How far light travels in a year (distance)
When you look in a mirror, what type of image do you see? A virtual image
What happens to light when it hits a mirror? it reflects
What is the incident ray? a ray of light that strikes a surface
What is the reflected ray? the ray of light that reflects off a surface
The angle of incidence is equal to...? angle of reflection
What is refraction? the bending of waves due to a change in speed
When a wave goes from air to water what happens to the speed? It slows down
When a wave goes from air to water, what happens to the angle of the light ray? Light bends towards the normal
What does a lens do? focuses light
What is a convex lens? A lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges
What does the lens do in the eye? Focuses light on the retina
What is the optic nerve? Nerve that connects the eye to the brain
What is the iris? Coloured part of the eye that has muscles to control the pupil size
What is the cornea? The transparent layer at the front of the eye
How does a pinhole camera work? light enters camera through pinhole and forms a real image on a screen
What is a real image? An image formed by focusing light rays onto a screen.
Light with a higher frequency is refracted MORE/LESS than light with a lower frequency? MORE
What are the 3 primary colours of light? red, green, blue
How do you make the secondary colours of light? By mixing two of the primary colours of light
If you mix all 3 primary colours of light, what colour do you produce? White
What happens to light if you put a red filter on? transmits red wavelengths and absorbs all others
What is a retina light-sensitive inner surface of the eye, containing rods and cones
What are the secondary colours of light cyan, magenta, yellow

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
