Deterrence Discouraging criminal acts that are caused by threats or punishments
Secondary deviance When deviance becomes a lifestyle.
Social sanctions Rewards or punishments to cause conformity
Deviance Any behavior that departs from societal norms.
Victim discounting Reducing the seriousness of crime with people in the lower social class
Ritualism People who go through the motions without going through the process. Like a burn out teacher.
Retreatism People reject the means and goals of society.
Social control Ways to encourage conformity to society norms.
Primary deviance Occasionally breaking norms.
Crime An act committed in violation of the law.
Criminal Justice System things that increase their chance of being good after release of jail.
Why is social control important? It is important because without it social life would be unpredictable, even chaotic
What is rehabilitation? When someone is trying to rehabilitate your by bad actions by doing something to make you better. In jail and put you on the track to get your GED
What does Labeling Theory help us understand? When being labeled by someone and you become what the label is. Ex. being called a cheater because you cheater on a test. So you start to see yourself as a cheater.
What is anomie, what causes it? When a society has no strong norms. It is caused by having weak norms and no one knows how to act. It causes strain theory in which deviance occurs when there is a gap between the goals of society and legit ways to reach those goals.
Is deviance the same everywhere? Why or why not No, it is based on social definitions, different societies have what they consider normal
Differentiate between positive and negative deviance Positive deviance is where you overly conform (being underweight) Negative is where you don't conform enough (being overweight)
With Control Theory, what leads to conformity? Under the control theory we are most likely to conform when there are strong bonds within our society.
Explain what the Differential Association Theory means If you hang out with people who have deviant behavior you are likely to start having deviant behavior like them.
What is ‘white collar’ crime? crime against your workplace
What types of crimes are tracked by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report? Index offenses Murder,Rape ,Robbery,Aggravated assault, Burgey, Larceny ,Hate crime,Motor burgley
What is a stigma? A negative label. For example a cheater
Identify deviant responses to strain (recognize innovation and retreatism especially) Innovation you accept sociable goals and have try to achieve them ; whereas, retreatism you don't try to accept sociable goals and you have no plan to ever
