QuestionAnswer
Simile a comparison using just, so, like, as, than
metaphor a comparison of unlike things
personification giving human traits to nonhuman things, giving human qualities to inanimate objects.
hyperbole an exaggeration to make a point. Extreme exaggeration.
Alliteration repetition of begging constant sounds
imagery writing that appeals to the five senses
tone the way the author feels about the writing
onomatopoeia words that are the sound they make (bang), the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named.
Irony a contrast of what is expected and what happens
Alliteration The repetition of beginning sounds
Allegory A symbolic narrative in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for a spiritual, historical, or political situation.
cliche An overused phrase or expression used so often that it's no longer original, interesting, or effective.
Idiom A commonly used phrase or expression whose literal meaning is different from its figurative meaning.
oxymoron Two contradictory words joined together.
Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds
Analogy A comparison of two things based on their being alike in some way.
Symbol A person, place or object which has a meaning in itself but suggests another meaning as well.
