A list of Spanish words that mean something different than they sound

Carpeta Folder (Not carpet) Guarda los papeles en la carpeta – Put the papers in the folder
Compromiso Commitment (Not just compromise, also means commitment) Tengo un compromiso esta noche – I have a commitment tonight Llegaron a uncompromiso para dividir los gastos del viaje. -- They reached a compromise to split the travel expenses.
Constipado To have a cold / nasal congestion (Not constipated!) Constipated=estreñido Estoy constipado – I have a cold (Not “I’m constipated”!)

Soportar to bear (not support) support=apoyar No puedo seguir intentando soportar tanto estrés sin descansar. I can’t keep trying to endure so much stress without resting.
Sano/a healthy (not sane) Sane=cuerdo Después de la operación, Juan se siente mucho más sano y con más energía. After the surgery, Juan feels much healthier and more energetic.
