Terms and definitions for GED HiSET Social Studies

TermDefinition
Amendment A change or addition to the U.S. Constitution.
Bill of Rights The first 10 amendments to the Constitution, protecting individual freedoms.
Checks and Balances A system that ensures no one branch of government becomes too powerful.
Federalism A system where power is shared between the national and state governments.
Separation of Powers Dividing government roles into legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
Democracy A form of government where power is held by the people, usually through voting.
Constitution The foundational document that outlines the U.S. system of government and laws.
Civil Rights Rights guaranteed to all citizens, such as freedom and equality under the law.
Due Process Legal steps the government must follow to protect individual rights.
Legislative Branch The branch of government that makes laws (Congress: Senate and House of Representatives)
Executive Branch The branch that enforces laws, headed by the President.
Judicial Branch The branch that interprets laws and ensures they are applied fairly (Supreme Court).
Economic System A system that defines how goods and services are produced and distributed.
Capitalism An economic system where businesses are privately owned, and prices are determined by supply and demand.
Supply and Demand An economic principle: prices go up when demand exceeds supply, and down when supply exceeds demand.
Great Depression A severe economic downturn that lasted through the 1930s.
New Deal Programs started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help the U.S. recover from the Great Depression.
Revolutionary War The war fought between the American colonies and Great Britain for independence (1775–1783).
Emancipation Proclamation An order by President Lincoln in 1863 that freed enslaved people in Confederate states.
Industrial Revolution A period of rapid industrial growth during the 18th and 19th centuries that changed how goods were made and societies functioned.
Bias A one-sided or unfair point of view in a source, such as a news article, speech, or historical document.
Liberty The basic freedoms and rights that individuals have in a society, especially under a democratic government.
