What did LaMark say about evolution? It is caused by acquired characteristics being inherited. (which is wrong)
What did Darwin say about evolution? Evolution is caused by natural selection.
What are the 4 parts of natural selection? All organisms have variations of traits, all organisms overproduce, competition for resources, "survival of the fittest".
Define species- 2 organisms that belong to the same species if they can interbreed.
Define population- A group of organisms that are the same species, same place, same time.
Define gene pool- All of the available genes in a population.
Define speciation- When 1 species becomes 2 or more species. ex. grand canyon squirrels.
Define convergent evolution- Start with 2 different species, become more ALIKE. (same env.)
Define divergent evolution- Start with 1 species, become more DIFFERENT. (different env.)
Define living fossil- A species that has NEVER changed. ex. horseshoe crab. (env. hasn't changed)
Theory of punctuated equilibrium- Evolution occurs in spurts.
