| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Relative frequency histogram | a histogram constructed by using relative frequencies rather than frequencies to determine heights of the bars. |
| mean | a measure of the center or average of the values of the data set. |
| Variability | when data are not all the same and differ from each other |
| Absolute deviation | the distance from a data value to the mean of the data distribution |
| Mean absolute deviation | a measure of the spread; the average distance between a data value and the mean of a data distribution |
| median | a measure of center for numerical data distributions ordered from least to greatest. Median is the middle value or the average of the middle values |
| quartile | three numbers that divide the data set into quarters; lower half, median, upper half |
| Interquartile range | the measure of the spread given by the difference between the third quartile and first quartile |
| box plot | a graphical representation of the five-number summary. The summary consists of minimum value, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum value |
| outlier | a data value that is much greater or much less than the rest of the data values. |
| Relative frequency | the fraction of data values that are included in an interval or category. To find, divide the number of date values bt the total numver in the set. |
| histogram | a graphical representation of a numerical data set that has been grouped in intervals represented by a bar. The height of the bar represents the frequency. |
| Frequency table | summarizes a data distribution. The table includes data values, grouped in intervals and frequencies |
| range | a measure of spread given by the difference between the maximum and minimum value in a data set. |
| observation | a data value collected from a person, animal, or object being studied. |
| dot plot | a plot of numerical data values along a number line. |
| data distribution | a summary of a data set that describes what values are in a data set and how often each data value occurs. |
| categorical data | set is an individual category from a set of categories. Not quantities of measurements. |
| numerical data | set is a number that could represent a quantity or measurement. Data values often have units. |
| statistical question | a question that can be answered by collecting data values that can vary |
