Verbs that change their meaning in the reflexive

Aburrir – to bore Aburrirse means to get bored. Me aburro en esa clase. I was bored in that class.
Acercar – to bring near Acercarse means to approach. El perro se acercó al niño. The dog approached the child.
Acordar – to agree Acordarse (de) means to remember. Me acuerdo de tu cumpleaños. I remembered your birthday.
Acostar – to lay down (someone) Acostarse means to go to bed. Me acosté a las diez. I went to bed at ten.
Admirar – to admire Admirarse means to be amazed / surprised. Me admiré de su valentía. I was amazed at his bravery.
Alegrar – to cheer up Alegrarse (de) means to be glad (about something). Me alegré de verte. I was glad to see you.
Burlar – to trick Burlarse de means to make fun of. Se burlaron de su acento. They made fun of his accent.
Caer – to fall Caerse means to fall down (accidentally). Se cayó en la calle. He fell down in the street.
Callar – to be quiet, hush Callarse means to become silent / shut up. ¡Cállate, por favor! You were quiet, please!
Comer – to eat Comerse means to eat up, devour (emphasis). Me comí todo el pastel. I ate up the whole cake.
Convertir – to convert Convertirse en means to turn into / become. El agua se convirtió en hielo. The water turned into ice.
Despedir – to fire (someone) Despedirse (de) means to say goodbye (to someone). Me despedí de mis amigos. I said goodbye to my friends.
Dormir – to sleep Dormirse means to fall asleep. Los niños se durmieron rápido. The children fell asleep quickly.
Encontrar – to find Encontrarse (con) means to meet (by chance). Me encontré con Ana en el mercado. I ran into Ana at the market.
Enfermar – to make sick Enfermarse means to become sick. Me enfermé el lunes. I got sick on Monday.
Enojar – to anger Enojarse (con) means to get angry (with someone). Me enojé con ella. I got mad at her.
Fijar – to fix, set Fijarse (en) means to notice, pay attention to. ¿Te fijaste en ese detalle? You noticed that detail.
Hacer – to do, make Hacerse means to become (professionally). Se hizo médico. He became a doctor.
Imaginar – to imagine Imaginarse means to guess or suppose. Me imaginé que estabas cansado. I guessed you were tired.
Ir – to go Irse means to go away, leave. Me fui a las cinco. I left at five.
Levantar – to lift, raise Levantarse means to get up. Me levanté a las siete. I got up at seven.
Llevar – to carry Llevarse means to take away, steal. ¿Quién se llevó mi bolígrafo? Someone took my pen.
Llevarse bien/mal – — Llevarse bien means to get along well/badly. Me llevé bien con mis vecinos. I got along well with my neighbors.
Meter – to put into Meterse (en) means to get into / meddle. No te metiste en mis asuntos. You got into my business.
Morir – to die (general) Morirse means to die (emotional emphasis). Mi abuela se murió ayer. My grandmother passed away yesterday.
Negar – to deny Negarse (a) means to refuse. Me negué a hacerlo. I refused to do it.
Olvidar – to forget (something) Olvidarse (de) means to forget (about something). Me olvidé de la cita. I forgot about the appointment.
Pasar – to pass, happen Pasarse means to overdo, go too far. Se pasó de sal en la sopa. He overdid the salt in the soup.
Parecer – to seem Parecerse (a) means to resemble. Te pareciste a tu padre. You resembled your father.
Poner – to put Ponerse means to put on / become (emotion). Me puse triste. I became sad.
Preocupar – to worry (someone) Preocuparse (por) means to worry (oneself). Me preocupé por ti. I worried about you.
Quedar – to remain, stay Quedarse means to stay behind, stay put. Me quedé en casa hoy. I stayed home today.

Quitar – to remove, take away Quitarse means to take off (clothing). Me quité el abrigo. I took off my coat.

Sentar – to seat (someone) Sentarse means to sit down. Me senté en esa silla. I sat in that chair.
Sentir – to feel (something) Sentirse means to feel (emotionally/physically). Me sentí cansado. I felt tired.
Temer – to fear Temerse means to suspect (something bad). Me temí lo peor. I suspected the worst.
Ver – to see Verse means to see oneself (in a condition). Me vi atrapado en el tráfico. I saw myself stuck in traffic.
Volver – to return Volverse means to become (sudden change). Se volvió loco. He went crazy.
