Phys:Wave Properties
TEKS P.8A, P.8B, P.8C
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wave | a disturbance that travels through a medium, transferring energy without transporting matter |
| harmonic motion | periodic motion where an object oscillates around an equilibrium point; motion that repeats itself over regular intervals of time |
| transverse wave | oscillations or vibrations of the particles in the medium are perpendicular to the direction of the wave's motion |
| longitudinal wave | the particles of the medium vibrate in a direction parallel to the direction of the wave's travel |
| wave velocity | the speed at which a wave propagates (moves) through a medium |
| frequency | the number of wave cycles that pass a given point in space per unit of time |
| hertz | the unit of measurement for frequency |
| period | the time it takes for one complete cycle or oscillation of a repetitive motion |
| amplitude | the maximum displacement of a wave or oscillating system from its equilibrium or resting position |
| wavelength | distance between corresponding points of two consecutive waves |
| electromagnetic waves | a form of radiation that travel though the universe. They are formed when an electric field couples with a magnetic field |
| electromagnetic spectrum | the full range of electromagnetic radiation, organized by frequency or wavelength |
| medium | a substance through which waves or energy can travel |
| crest | the highest point of a wave, representing the maximum displacement of the medium from its rest position |
| trough | the lowest point of a wave, represents the maximum negative displacement of the wave from its rest position |
| compression | a region within a longitudinal wave where particles are closely packed together |
| rarefaction | a region where the particles of the medium are spread out |
