Unit 5 Vocab Review

Use this study stack to review key vocabulary from Unit 5!

QuestionAnswer
coefficient a number in front of a variable (ex: the 8 in 8m)
variable an unknown value represented by a letter
equation 13 = y - 7
equivalent expressions 7 + 3x - x + 2 = 2x + 9
constant a number in an expression or equation that does not change
Distributive Property 6(5x - 3) = 6(5x) - 6(3) = 30x - 18
term any number(ex: 2.5), variable(ex: z), or number times a variable (ex: 9q); separated by addition and/or subtraction symbols
Solution to an equation a value for a variable that makes both sides of an equation true
inverse operations math operations that "undo" each other; subtraction and addition are inverse operations to each other; multiplying and dividing are also inverse operations
like terms terms that share a variable or are constants (ex: 3y and 4y)
independent variable a variable that affects another variable in a relationship (ex: time affects distance when traveling in a car).
dependent variable a variable that DEPENDS on another variable to find a value (ex: the total cost for movie tickets depends on the amount of tickets being purchased).
