Political Parties

| Candidate | a person running for political office |
| Democratic Party | a political party that believes that the federal government should take a more active role in people's lives, particularly those who are in need |
| Republican Party | a political party that believes that the federal government should play a small role in people's lives; they favor lower taxes and less government spending |
| Libertarian Party | a political party that believes in individual freedom and the only purpose of government is to protect this freedom |
| third party | a political party that is not one of the two major parties in the country: a minor party |
| two party system | A political system dominated by two major parties; more or less equal and strength |
| party platform | a written statement of the goals of a political party |
| candidate platfrom | a written statement of the goals of a candidate |
| interest group | a group of people who are concerned with a particular issue and who try to influence legislators to act in their favor, also known as a special interest group |
| lobbying | participating in activities in order to influence government officials |
| public opinion | the views of the general public |
| public policy | government actions in the form of laws, rules, or regulations |
| bias | a preference, opinion or attitude that favors one way of thinking or feeling over another |
| propaganda | the method of spreading ideas or information for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person |
| symbolism | the use of something to represent ideas or qualities |
| media | the various methods of communicating information |
| watchdog | a person or group who acts as a protector or guardian |
| Gatekeeper | a person who controls access to something |
| Whistle blower | a person, often an employee, revealing information about activity within a private or public organization that is deemed illegal, immoral, illicit, unsafe or fraudulent |
| Primaries | a nominating election held to choose party candidates who will run in the general election |
| Runoff | an election that takes place when no candidate earns a majority of the vote in a previous race |
| Elections | an organized choice by vote to select a person for a political office or other position |
