TermDefinition
Postprandial occurring after a meal.
Purulent drainage thick, milky fluid oozes from a wound that isn't healing properly.
Pustule small blister or pimple on skin containing pus
Reverse Isolation (Protective) Used to protect a patient from germs when their immune system is not working properly.
Rigor Mortis stiffening of the joints/muscles of a body a few hours after death.
Sanguineous drainage the leakage of fresh bright red blood produced by an open wound.
Scabies an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite. Requires contact precautions.
Sentinel Event patient safety event resulting in death or serious harm. Must be reported to The Joint Commission (TJC).
Sero-sanguineous drainage combination of serous fluid and blood. It's usually a light pink to red color.
Shunt hollow tube surgically placed in the brain or spine to help drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and redirect it to another location in the body where it can be reabsorbed.
The Patient Self Determination Act requires that an individual receive, at the time of admission, written information concerning his right under state law to make decisions concerning his medical care, including the right to accept or refuse medical or surgical treatment and the right to formulate advance directives.
Sphygmomanometer an instrument for measuring blood pressure.
Tachycardia fast heart rate.
Tachypnea abnormally rapid breathing.
Thrombophlebitis an inflammatory process that causes a blood clot to form and block one or more veins, usually in the legs. Can be superficial (near the surface) or deep within the muscle (DVT).
Vesicle (blister) a thin-walled sac filled with a fluid, usually clear and small.
Xeroderma extreme dryness of the skin.
