Biodiversity & Genetic Variation

Endangered Species A species of animal or plant that is seriously at risk of extinction
Predator An animal that kills and eats other animals
Ecosystem An environment made up of living and nonliving things interacting together
Population All of the individuals of the same species within an ecological community
Prey An animal that is hunted or killed by another animal as food
Species A group of living organisms consisting of animals or plants that are similar and which can produce young animals or plants
Biodiversity The variety of species in a certain ecosystem
Protein The basis of living tissues, made from genetic instructions
Sexual Reproduction The production of offspring by combining male and female sex cells.
Asexual Reproduction The production of offspring from only one parent
Heterozygous Two different alleles for a specific gene
Genotype Genetic make-up of an organism
Allele A form of a gene represented by a letter
Chromosome Made of genes; carry hereditary information
Trait Characteristic or feature of an organism
Phenotype Physical Traits of an organism
Punnett Square A square grid that helps predict genetic outcomes when the genes of two parents are crossed
Homozygous Two of the same identical alleles for a specific gene
Gene A section of DNA; controls proteins created, and thus what traits an organism has
