Lesson 3

Questions and answer for chapter 3

QuestionAnswer
Define embryology in your own words. The study of the formation and development of an embryo and fetus.
Distinguish between a homologous structure and an analogous structure. Homologous structures share an ancestor but serve a different function but analogous structures serve a similar function but do not share an ancestor.
Use the term vestigal structure in a complete sentence. During evolution, some structures may lose their original function and become vestigial structures.
Scientists use molecular biology to determine how two species are related by comparing the genes in one species to genes. In related species.
Discuss how pharyngeal pouches provide evidence for biological evolution. These structures provide evidence of evolution that the organisms evolved from the same ancestry.
Explain how some blind cave salamanders have eyes. How might this be evidence that cave salamanders evolved from sighted ancestors. As these ancestors adapted to darker environments, the selective pressure for vision decreased, leading to the reduction or loss of functional eyesight.
Interpret the wings of a flightless cormorant are an example of which type of structure. The wings of a flightless cormorant are an example of a vestigial structure.
What are four areas of study that provide evidence for evolution. Anatomy, molecular biology, biogeography, and fossils.
Predict what a fossil that illustrates the evolution of a bird from reptile might look like. Birds share many characteristics with reptiles such as being vertebrates, having scales on parts of their bodies, and laying amniotic eggs with shells.
