base The surface a solid object stands on, or the bottom line of a shape such as a triangle or rectangle.
capacity The amount of space an object occupies (Volume). Usually referring to liquids!
centimeter (cm) A metric measure of length. The abbreviation is cm. 100 centimeters = 1 meter
conversion A change in one unit of measure to another. You can only do this within the same system. Ex: metric to metric, customary to customary. We do not convert between two different systems. Ex: 12 in = 1 ft Ex: 100 cm = 1,000 mm Ex: 1 gal = 4 qt
cubic centimeter (cu cm) Volume made by a cube that is 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm.
cubic foot (cu ft) Volume made by a cube that is 1 ft x 1 ft x 1 ft.
cubic inch (cu in) Volume made by a cube that is 1 in x 1 in x 1 in.
cubic meter (cu m) Volume made by a cube that is 1 m x 1 m x 1 m.
cup (c) A customary measure of capacity. The abbreviation is c. 1 c = 8 fl oz
customary system the measurement system used most often in the United States
edge The line where two surfaces (face) meet.
foot (ft) A customary measure of length equal to 12 inches. The abbreviation is ft. 1 ft = 12 in
formula Numbers and symbols that show how to work something out. Ex: Volume = L x W x H Ex: Area = L x W Ex: Perimeter = S + S + S + S
gallon (gal) A customary measure of capacity. The abbreviation is gal 1 gal = 4 qt = 16 c
gram (g) A metric unit of mass (weight). The abbreviation is g. 1,000 grams = 1 Kilogram
height The vertical distance from top to bottom
inch (in) A customary measure of length equal to 1/12 foot or 1/36 yard. The abbreviation is in. 1 in = 1/12 ft = 1/36 yd
kilogram (kg) A metric measure of mass (weight). The abbreviation is kg. 1 kg = 1,000 grams
kilometer (km) A metric measure of length that equals 1,000 meters. The abbreviation is km. 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters
line plot a graph that shows the frequency of data along a number line
measurement measurement to find the size or amount of something
meter (m) The basic unit of length for the metric system. The abbreviation is m. 1 meter = 100 cm
metric system a system of measurement based on the number 10
mile (mi) A customary measure of length equal to 5,280 feet, or 1,760 yards. The abbreviation is mi. 1 mi = 5,280 ft = 1,760 yd
milliliter (mL) A metric measure of volume. Mostly used to measure liquids. The abbreviation is ml. 1,000 mL = 1 L
millimeter (mm) A metric measure of length. The abbreviation is mm. 1,000 millimeters = 1 meter
object mass A measure of how much matter is in an object. Like weight, but for the metric system.
ounce (oz) A customary unit for measuring weight & capacity. Ounce is abbreviated as oz. 16 ounces = 1 pound
pint (pt) A customary measure of capacity. The abbreviation is pt. 1 pt = 2 c
pound (lb) A customary unit of measuring weight. Pound is abbreviated as lb. 1 pound = 16 ounces
quart (qt) A customary measure of capacity. The abbreviation is qt. 1 qt = 2 pt = 4 cups
right rectangular prism A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles.
unit cube A unit used to measure Volume.
Volume The amount of space an object takes up.
weight A customary measurement that indicates how heavy something is.
yard (yd) A customary measure of length equal to 3 feet, or 36 inches. The abbreviation is yd. 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in
