| Term | Definition |

| Ballad | Type of narrative poem that tells a story and was originally meant to be sung or recited. |
| Biography | An account of a person’s life written by another person and is usually presented in third person point-of-view. |
| Blank Verse | Unrhymed poetry written in iambic pentameter. Most of Shakespeare’s drama is in blank verse. |
| Characterization | The way that a writer creates and develops a character’s personality |
| Chorus | Group of actors who commented on the action of a play |
| Foil | A character who provides a striking contrast to another character, which allows the writer to call attention to certain traits possessed by another character |
| Free Verse | Poetry that does not contain regular patterns of rhythm or rhyme. |
| Genre | Category in which a work of literature is classified. Examples include nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc. |
| Hyperbole | A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect. |
| Iambic Pentameter | Metrical pattern of five feet, or units, each of which is made up of two syllables, the first unstressed and the second stressed. |
