TermDefinition
Ballad Type of narrative poem that tells a story and was originally meant to be sung or recited.
Biography An account of a person’s life written by another person and is usually presented in third person point-of-view.
Blank Verse Unrhymed poetry written in iambic pentameter. Most of Shakespeare’s drama is in blank verse.
Characterization The way that a writer creates and develops a character’s personality
Chorus Group of actors who commented on the action of a play
Foil A character who provides a striking contrast to another character, which allows the writer to call attention to certain traits possessed by another character
Free Verse Poetry that does not contain regular patterns of rhythm or rhyme.
Genre Category in which a work of literature is classified. Examples include nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, etc.
Hyperbole A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect.
Iambic Pentameter Metrical pattern of five feet, or units, each of which is made up of two syllables, the first unstressed and the second stressed.
