Force and Motion
Force and Motion Vcabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| acceleration | To change speed and/or direction per a unit of time ( sec. ,min., etc) |
| average speed | The total distance an object travels divided by the amount of time it took the object to travel that distance. |
| balanced forces | When the magnitude and direction of more than one force acting on an object results in zero net force. |
| force | A push or pull. |
| friction | A force that exists at the boundary between any two pieces of matter that are in contact with each other. |
| braking distance | The distance a vehicle travels from the moment the driver applies the brakes until the vehicle comes to a stop. |
| net force | Combined forces acting on an object. |
| kinetic energy | The energy an object has because of its motion. |
| speed | The rate at which an object moves. |
| inertia | An objects resistance to a change in its motion. |
| mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| stopping distance | The distance traveled during the driver's reaction time plus the braking distance. |
| reaction time | The interval between the moment a driver realizes that there is a problem and when the driver applies his brakes. |
| unbalanced force | When the magnitude and direction of more than one force acting on an object gives a net force unequal to zero. |
