Unit 7: Natural Selection & Evolution

TermDefinition
artificial selection Happens when humans choose specific plants or animals to reproduce based on desired traits.
natural selection When organisms with the traits best fit for their environment survive and reproduce.
adaptation A body part or behavior that helps an organism survive better in its environment.
Charles Darwin English Scientist known as the father of evolution by natural selection.
selective breeding The process by which humans choose a plant or animal to breed based on specific traits.
GMO Genetically modified organism; used to introduce beneficial traits.
mutations A change that occurs in the DNA sequence.
homologous structure Similar body parts in different animals, showing a common ancestor.
vestigial structure A body part that has lost its original function through evolution.
analogous structure Different structures with the same function, not from a common ancestor.( i.e. bat wing and butterfly wing)
evolution The gradual change in a species over time.
