Child Development

TermDefinition
Development Is the gradual process through which babies become adults
Child development Is the scientific study of children from conception to adolescence
Individual life cycle Is a description of the stages of change people experience throughout (birth-old age)
Heredity Includes all the traits that are passed to a child from blood relatives
Environment Includes all the conditions and situations that surround and affect a child
Genes Are sections of the DNA molecules found in a persons cells that determine his or her individual traits
Genetics Is the study of the factors involved in the passing of traits in living being from one generation to another
Universal Apply to all children throughout all times
Predictable Will occur in future observations
Orderly Patterns are sequenced and will occur at approximate times
Constancy Many aspects of a persons growth and development are unchanging
Sequenced steps The steps in growth and development that follow one another in a set
Teachable moment Is an optimal time when a person can learn a new task
Age norm The typical time when a development milestone occurs
Developmental acceleration Occurs when a child like an older child
Developmental delay Occurs when a child performs like a younger child
Motivation Is a child's desire to achieve also makes growth and development rates vary
Interrelated Interact in complex ways
Maturational Determined by heredity and biological maturation
Psychoanalytic personality and mental health was determined by how children coped with their physical drive
