English Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Imagery A form of figurative language used to help readers visualize a part of the story in the readers mind. They can utilize the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste.
Symbolism A symbol is an object, action, color, or phrase that stands for something other than itself, often of a more abstract nature. Often used in literature like poetry and novels more meaningful.
Theme The overall message of a story, moral, and life lesson that the author is trying to communicate to the reader, and anyone can use or take away.
Utopia An imagined place of ideal perfection in laws, government, and social conditions.
Dystopia Often is described as a utopia, but turns into an oppressive, miserable state. Fictional/futuristic, can serve as a warning or cautionary tale, a comment on our own current society.
Setting The time and place in which a story occurs.
Seek Power They want power and look for opportunities to gain power.
Resist Power They go against and challenge those in charge.
Exert Power They have all the power and boss others around.
Submit to Power They listen to those in charge, without challenging any rules, even if the rules are unfair.
Human Vs. Society Conflicts When a character struggles with unfair treatment or judgement from the society or the political system.
Human Vs. Human Conflicts When there is a struggle between 2 characters or 2 groups of characters. Verbal disagreement or physical confrontation.
Human Vs. Self Conflicts When a character struggles with something internally. Strong, negative emotions, or having to make a tough decision.
Human Vs. Nature Conflicts When there is a struggle between a character and a force of nature. Bad weather, disease, an animal, or natural disaster.
Character Development The changes a character undergoes over the course of a story as a result of their actions/experiences. A Dynamic character.
