Pre-Algebra Ch 9

Pre-Algebra Ch 9 vocabulary

TermDefinition
constant of variation the slope, or rate of change, in the equation y = kx, represented by k
constant rate of change the rate of change between any two data points in a linear relationship is the same or constant
dependent variable the variable in a relation with a value that depends on the value of the independent variable
direct variation a special type of linear equation that describes rate of change. A relationship such that as x increases in value, y increases or decreases at a constant rate
function a function is a special relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range
function notation a way to name a function that is defined by an equation. In function notation, the equation y = 3x - 8 us written as f(x) = 3x - 8
function rule the operation performed on the input of a function
function table a table organizing the input, rule, and output of a function
independent variable the variable in a function with a value that is subject to choice
linear equation an equation in which the variables appear in separate terms and neither variable contains an exponent other than 1. The graph of a linear equation is a straight line.
linear relationship relationship that has straight line graphs
rate of change a change in one quantity with respect to another quantity
slope the ratio of the rise, or vertical change, to the run, or horizontal change. The slope describes the steepness of a line. Slope = rise/run
slope-intercept form a linear equation in the form of y =mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept
substitution use algebraic methods to find an exact solution of a system of equations
system of equations a set of two or more equations with the same variables
vertical line test if any vertical line drawn on the graph of a relation passes through no more than one point on the graph for each value of x in the domain, the the relation is a function
x-intercept the x-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x-axis
y-intercept the y-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-axis

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
