Rhetorical Question The author/speaker asks a question of the audience for effect; does not expect an answer
Narrative Devices Specific choices the author makes about how tells the story, how the events will unfold in time, and what language is used to convey these elements
Chronological Order Events are related in time order of what happens (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)
Sequence Order of events in a story
Structure How the story is organized including the organization of events, the order of the story, and way in which the story is told
Syntax Sentence structure; the arrangement of words and phrases in sentences
Connotation Positive or negative associations that you have with a word
Denotation Dictionary Definition for a word
Diction Author’s word choice
Dialogue Conversations between characters; quotes where characters talk
