Ch 7, Algebraic Expressions

algebraic expression | a math expression with two main parts, variables and constants, joined together with a math operation (+, -, x, /) |
coefficient | a number used to multiply a variable |
equivalent ratios | ratios which have the same value, even though they may look different |
simplest form | an expression written in its easiest to use way Ex: 4x+2x +1 = 6x +1 |
like terms | terms that can be added or subtracted together because their variables (such as x or y) with their exponents (such as the 2 in x2) are the same Ex: 5x + 9 + 3x - 2 = 8x + 7 |
unlike terms | variables and/or their exponents that are different and cannot be put together Ex: 4x + 8y + 12w |
substitute | putting values where the letters are |
