| alcohol abuse | drinking leads to problems but is not dependent on alcohol |
| alcoholism | alcohol dependence that involves cravings, loss of control, physical dependence and tolerance |
| anxiety | a vague and uneasy feeling in response to stress |
| compulsion | repeating an act over and over again |
| defense mechanism | an unconscious reaction that blocks unpleasant or threatening feelings |
| delusion | a false belief |
| delusion of grandeur | exaggerated belief about one's importance, talents, wealth, and power |
| delusion of persecution | a false belief that one is being mistreated, abused, or harassed |
| drug abuse | using a drug for non-medical or non-therapy effects |
| drug addiction | a strong urge or craving to use a substance and cannot stop using |
| flashback | reliving trauma in thoughts during the day and in nightmares during sleep |
| hallucination | hearing, seeing, feeling, or smelling things that aren't real |
| mental | relating to the mind |
| mental health | the person copes with and adjusts to everyday stresses in ways accepted by society |
| mental health disorder | a disturbance in the ability to cope with or adjust to stress |
| mental illness | a disturbance in the ability to cope with or adjust to stress |
| obsession | a reoccurring, unwanted though, idea, or image |
| panic | an intense and sudden feeling of fear, anxiety, terror, or dread |
| personality | the set of attitudes, values, traits, and beliefs of a person |
| phobia | an intense fear |
| psychiatric disorder | a disturbance in the ability to cope with or adjust to stress |
| psychosis | a state of severe mental impairment |
| stress | a response or change in the body cause by any emotional, physical, social, or economical factor |
| stressor | and event or factor that causes stress |
| suicide | to kill oneself on purpose |
| suicide contagion | exposure to suicide or suicidal behaviors within ones family, peer groups, or media reports |
| withdrawal syndrome | a physical and mental response after stopping or severely reducing the use of a substance that was used regularly |
