| predator | an animal that hunts other animals for food |
| prey | an animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food |
| parasite | an organism that lives on or in a host and causes harm to the host an organism that lives on or in a host and causes harm to the host |
| host | an animal or plant that nourishes and supports a parasite |
| decomposer | an organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms |
| ecosystem | all the organisms that live in a place, together with their nonliving environment |
| herbivore | a consumer that eats only plants |
| omnivore | a consumer that eats both plants and animals |
| carnivore | a consumer that eats only animals |
| native species | species that normally live and thrive in a particular ecosystem |
