| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| ALARA | concept of radiation protection that states all exposures should be kept “as low as reasonably achievable |
| cathode | negative electrode in the x-ray tube. |
| Density | overall darkness or blackness of an image. |
| Focusing Cup | keeps electrons suspended in an electron cloud at the cathode and directs them toward the target. |
| Silver halide crystals | The fast film responds more quickly because the silver halide crystals in the emulsion are larger, the larger the crystals, the faster the film speed |
| Kiliovoltage Kvp | highest voltage of x-ray tube used during an exposure. |
| Latent period/ image | invisible image on the x-ray film after exposure but before processing. |
| Milliamperage | One-thousandth (1/1000) of an ampere, a unit of measurement used to describe the intensity of an electrical current. |
| Primary radiation | same as primary beam. |
| X-Ray | high-energy ionizing electromagnetic radiation. |
| biscecting technique | Intraoral technique of exposing periapical films. |
| cone-cutting | occurs at the edge of the film and is often due to misalignment of the collimator and/or the film |
| elongation | the teeth appear too long. Elongation of images is caused by insufficient (not enough) vertical angulation, or vertical angulation that is too “flat” |
| forehortening | the teeth appear too short. Foreshortening of images results from excessive vertical angulation |
| ionization | Process by which electrons are removed from atoms, causing the harmful effects of radiation in humans. |
| radiopaque | images are structures that are dense and resist the passage of radiation causing the image to appear light or white depending on the density. |
| cephalometeric radiograph | X-ray used for orthodontic treatment to show the bony and soft tissue areas of the facial profile. |
| Digital image | Filmless method of capturing an image and displaying it by using an image sensor, an electronic signal, and a computer to process and store the image. |
