Persuasive Language

Examples of Persuasive Language Politics, Editorials, Reviews, and Advertising.
What are Adjectives? Descriptive words used to add emphasis and to create an emotional response.
What is Alliteration? The repetition of initial consonant sounds in order to emphasize certain words and make them more memorable.
What are Anecdotes? Short, personal stories used to connect with the audience and add evidence or credibility to the argument.
What is Asyndeton? Figurative Speech in which coordinating conjunctions are omitted.
What is Assertion? When an idea is presented as fact without full explanation or evidence; it is used to assert authority and make claims sound factual.
What are Attacks? When a speaker addresses an opposing view or speaker and attacks their argument or character.
What is Bias? The presentation of only one side of an issue or view point and is used to subjectively influence an audience.
What is Connotation? Ideas or feelings that a certain word invokes and is used to create certain emotional responses in an audience.
Ethos Establishment of authority and reliability. Used to gain confidence and trust.
Pathos Is directed to make an emotional response in the audience.
What is Exaggeration? Representation of something as greater than it is and is used to grab attention.
What is Evidence? Facts or information that indicate whether a view is true or valid.
What is Denotation? Literal dictionary meaning.
What is Diction? An author's word choice.
What is Figurative Language? Used to create imagery and express things in a non-literal way. Intended to be convincing, vivid, and more emotive.
What is Generalization? Inference that a claim is true for most people.
The Rule of Three? When groups of 3 adjectives or phrases are used to make ideas more memorable.
What is Jargon? Special words or expression used by a profession or certain group; it is used to signal expertise and establish credibility.
What are Loaded Words? Words charged with an implication.
What are Pronouns? They take the place of nouns and they create a sense of unity with an audience or distance from a common enemy.
Logos Persuasive Language used to appeal to the rationality of the audience.
What is Meiosis? Figure of speech that minimizes the importance of something through euphemism.
What is Euphemism? Words that softens an uncomfortable topic.
What are Rhetorical Questions? Statements voiced as questions that are not meant to be answered.
