Poetry Vocab Quiz Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Stanza | Divisions of a poem based on thought, meter, or rhyme and usually recognized by the number of lines they contain. |
| Ballad | A narrative poem often derived from folklore and originally intended to be sung or recited. |
| Refrain | A line or group of lines of repeated throughout a poem. |
| Sonnet | A poem with 14 lines. 2 types: Italian & English. |
| Italian Sonnet | Starts with an octave, ends with a sestet. |
| English Sonnet | 3 quatrain, 1 couplet, rhyme scheme stays the same. |
| Haiku | A seventeen-syllable poem about nature, composed of three lines of five, seven, and five syllables. |
| Cinquain | 5 lines; 1, 2, 3, 4, 1 stressed syllable pattern. |
| Shaped Poem | A poem that rarely follows any specific stanza or verse form but is shaped in an image that supports the subject of a poem. |
| Chiasmus | A type of parallelism that inverts the parallel structure, keeping the elements of the original phrase, clause, or sentence, but reversing them in the following unit. |
