Airstream Mechanisms In order for there to be sound there must be moving air -For speech, something must set the air in motion (airstream mechanism)
Pulmonic Egressive Airstream mechanism Air moving outward initiated by the lungs
Non-pulmonic airstreams -Glottalic Egressive Airstream -Glottalic Ingressive Airstream -Velaric ingressive Airstream
Glottalic Egressive Airstream (ejectives) - Larynx is raised, glottis is closed -Air pressure in the vocal tract increases --> when the air is released, a popping sound is produced
Glottaic Ingressive Airstream (implosives) -Larynx is lowered - Air pressure is lowered -Causing air to rush in
Velaric Ingressive Airstream (clicks) Produced with air trapped between a closure at the velum (soft palate) and another anterior closure like the alveolar ridge
Phonation types -voicing -breathy -creaky
Breathy (murmur) Vocal folds vibrate while remaining apart
Creaky (vocal fry) produced with the posterior part of the vocal folds held tightly together while the anterior par tis vibrating at a slow rate
Diacritics broad vs. narrow transcription
Broad Transcription (phonemic transcription) Ignores details, capturing only enough of a pronunciation to show how tha word differs from other words in the language
Narrow transcription Captures as much of the specific pronunciation as possible with as many details as possible
