| allusion | an expression designed to call something to mind without explicitly mentioning it |
| anthimeria | a rhetorical term for the creation of a new word or expression by using a noun as a verb |
| hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally |
| irony | the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally means the opposite |
| metaphor | a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which is not literally applied |
| metonymy | the substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant |
| oxymoron | a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction |
| paradox | a statement or situation that seems to contradict itself or go against common sense, but may still be true |
| personification | the representation of a thing or idea as a person or by the human form |
| pun | a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word |
| simile | a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing using like or as |
| synecdoche | a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole |
| understatement | the presentation of something as being smaller, worse, or less than it actually is |
| alliteration | the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of close words |
| anaphora | the use of a word referring to or replacing a word used earlier in a sentence |
| epistrophe | the repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses/ sentences |
| parallelism | the state of being parallel |
| antimetabole | the repetition of words in successive clauses, but in transposed order |
| antithesis | an opposition or contrast of ideas is expressed by parallelism of words that are opposites of each other |
| circumlocution | the use of many words where fewer would do |
| climax | the most intense, exciting, or important point of something |
| hypophora | a figure of speech in which a speaker poses a question and answers it immediately |
| juxtaposition | the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrast |
| rhetorical question | a question asked for a purpose other than to obtain information |
| zeugma | a figure of speech in which a word applies to two others in different senses |
| polysyndeton | a literary device that uses multiple conjunctions in close succession to create emphasis, rhythm, and urgency |
| asyndeton | a literary device where conjunctions are intentionally omitted to change a sentence's tone |
