Adding and Subtracting Fractions Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Fraction A number that represents part of a whole, written in the form of a/b, where "a" is the numerator and "b" is the denominator.
Numerator The top number in a fraction that shows how many parts are being considered.
Denominator The bottom number in a fraction that shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Common Denominator A shared multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions, used to simplify adding or subtracting fractions.
Like denominators Fractions that have the same denominator.
Unlike denominators Fractions that do not have the same denominator.
Simplify To reduce a fraction to its simplest form, where the numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1.
Equivalent fractions Fractions that represent the same value, even if they have different numerators and denominators.
