What was the Warring States Period? What did kingdoms do to protect their territory during this time? The Warring States Period was a period of frequent fighting between the various war lords and kingdoms of China. During this time, kingdoms built defensive walls to protect their territory.
How did the Qin dynasty begin? The Qin dynasty began when Ying Zheng, the king of Qin, defeated the war lords and gained control over China.
The feudal system involved the exchange of land for loyal service. How did Emperor Qin end the feudal system? Emperor Qin ended the feudal system by organizing the empire into military districts and appointing officials to govern them.
Standardize means “to make things the same type or have the same basic features.” How did Emperor Qin standardize systems in China? Emperor Qin standardized systems in China by… instituting (creating) a uniform writing system establishing a uniform code of laws creating a unified system of weights and measures standardizing coins (making them all the same type)
What did Emperor Qin do to protect northern China? What was this protection later known as? To protect northern China Emperor Qin had the walls that were built during the Warring States period connected into one solid wall. This became known as the Great Wall of China.
What philosophy did the Qin dynasty practice? The Qin dynasty practiced the philosophy of Legalism.
Describe this philosophy Legalism was the idea that people were naturally selfish and could only live under strict laws so the ruler needed complete control over its people and their ideas.
Being immortal means living forever. How did Emperor Qin try to become immortal? Emperor Qin tried to become immortal by searching for a mythical elixir of life. He sent out ships to search for a magician who held the elixir. Emperor Qin also drank mercury believing it would make him immortal.
