| Term | Definition |

| Soliloquy | a long speech, in a play or in a prose work, made by a character who is alone. The character reveals his or her private thoughts and feelings to the audience or reader. |
| Aside | lines whispered to the audience or to another character on stage (not meant to be heard by all of the characters on stage) |
| Allusion | A reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art. Understanding what a writer is saying often depends on recognizing allusions |
| Comic Relief | a bit of humor injected into a serious play to relieve the heavy tension of tragic events |
| Dramatic Irony | occurs when the audience knows something that the character on stage does not know |
| Tragedy | a serious play with an unhappy ending |
| Pun | the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings to make a joke or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words. |
| Foreshadow | author gives hints at what might happen later in the story |
| Tragic Flaw | a character trait that leads one to his/her own downfall or destruction |
