Expressions & Equations
Term | Definition |
---|---|
algebraic expression | an expression (math sentence) that contains at least one variable |
braces | Grouping symbols { } used in pairs to group things together. |
brackets | Grouping symbols [ ] used in pairs to group things together. |
coefficient | A number used to multiply a variable. Ex: 6x means 6 times x. x is the variable, so 6 is the coefficient. |
constraint | A restriction, limitation, or boundary that is placed upon variables used in equations that model real-world situations. Ex: x > c |
dependent variable | a variable whose value is determined by the value of the related independent variable. |
determine | Find the only possible answer |
equation | A mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent. Ex: 7+2 = 10-1 |
evaluate | to calculate the value of, to solve |
exponent | A mathematical notation indicating how many times the base is to be multiplied. |
finite | Not infinite. It has an end, or can be measured and given a value. |
identify | To find, determine, locate, notice or observe. |
independent variable | A variable in a mathematical equation whose value determines that of a dependent variable. |
Inequalities | a mathematical sentence involving <, >, or = plus < or > |
order of operations | the order in which operations in an expression to be evaluated are carried out. 1. grouping 2. exponents 3. multiplication and division 4. addition and subtraction |
parentheses | Grouping symbols ( ) used in pairs to group things together. |
substitution | The replacement of the letters in an algebraic expression with known values. |
term | In algebra, a term is either: a single number, or a variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. |
unknown | Found in an expression or equation, it is the variable to be solved. The solution of the equation is the value of the unknown. |
variable | A letter that represents a number. |
