Unit 5 Vocab 8th

Exploring Irrational Numbers, Integer Exponents, and Scientific Notation

TermDefinition
Base the number or value that is being raised to a power or exponent.
Cube Root the inverse of cubing a number using ∛
Decimal Expansion representation of a number in base-10 showing place value with a decimal.
Exponent a symbol written above and to the right of a base, that shows how many times that base should be multiplied by itself.
Exponential Notation a shorthand way of writing repeated multiplication, and indicates that the base is a factor of 10.
Inverse Operation an operation that undoes what has been done in the previous operation (opposite operation)
Irrational Number a number that cannot be represented as a fraction. A number that does not terminate and does not repeat.
Negative Exponent Rule multiplicative inverse of the bases. States that the base with a negative exponent must be written as its reciprocal
Perfect Cube a number that is equal to the number, multiplied by itself, three times.
Perfect Square the product of a rational number multiplied by itself.
Properties of Integer Exponents positive exponents tell us how many times the base is multiplied by itself. Negative exponents tell us to take the reciprocal of the base then multiply that number by itself that many times.
Product Rule states that if two factors raised to an exponent are being multiplied together, and they have the same base, we can add the exponents.
Power Rule states that if a base raised to a power is being raised to another power, multiply the exponents and the bases remains the same.
Power of Product Rule when a product is raised to a power, the result is the product of each factor raised to the power.
Power of Quotient Rule when a quotient is raised to a power, the result is the quotient of the numerator to the power and the denominator to the power.
Quotient Rule when dividing two numbers with exponents, the exponents can be subtracted.
Radical The √ symbol that is used to denote square root or nth roots
Rational Number a number that can be written as a fraction, that terminates or repeats.
Scientific Notation a way of writing very large or very small numbers. A number between 1-10 is multiplied by a power of 10.
Significant Digits the number of digits in a value, not including the leading zeroes.
Square Root the inverse of squaring a number. √
Zero Exponent Rule states that any number raised to the zero power is 1.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
