Colonization When one country establishes control over a less powerful area, culture, or group of people
Geography The environment in which you live that affects the lifestyle you live based on your resources
Encomienda System A forced labor system and structure setup in the Americas by the Spanish invaders designed to reap the rewards of the land, while controlling the Native Americans
Columbian Exchange The interaction between Europe and the Americas that led to massive exposure and cultural diffusion
Old World Name for Europe/Asia/Africa as it was familiar to the Europeans
New World Name for The Americas as it was "newly found" by the Europeans
Smallpox A disease that both intentionally and unintentionally wiped out the majority of the Latin Americans during the Columbian Exchange
Treaty of Tordesillas The agreement between Spain and Portugal that divided the world up into areas for colonization
Mercantilism An economic policy based around a Mother Country controlling wealth and trade using their colonies
Francisco Pizzaro Spanish explorer known for conquering the Inca Empire
Hernan Cortes Spanish explorer known for conquering the Aztec Empire
Christopher Columbus Spanish explorer known for sailing to the Americas
Caravel/Lateen Sail Ships and sails that allowed the European explorers to dominate the seas in the 15th & 16th century
Conquistadors Spanish word for the explorers and conquerors who defeated the Latin American empires
