CH 6 Vocabulary

Definition
equation a mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign, =, to show that two expressions are equal
equation in two variables an equation that represents two quantities that change in relationship to one another
dependent variable the variable that represents the output values of a function. Its value depends depends on the independent variable
independent variable the variable that represents the input values of a function. Its quantity can change freely
inverse operations operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division
solution a value that makes an equation true
solution of an equation in two variables an ordered pair ( x , y ) that makes an equation true
Addition Property of Equality When you add the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal.
Subtraction Property of Equality When you subtract the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal.
Division Property of Equality When you divide the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal.
Muliplication Property of Equality When you multiply the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal.
Multiplicative Inverse Property The product of a nonzero number n and its reciprocal, is one
