| equation | a mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign, =, to show that two expressions are equal |
| equation in two variables | an equation that represents two quantities that change in relationship to one another |
| dependent variable | the variable that represents the output values of a function. Its value depends depends on the independent variable |
| independent variable | the variable that represents the input values of a function. Its quantity can change freely |
| inverse operations | operations that "undo" each other, such as addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division |
| solution | a value that makes an equation true |
| solution of an equation in two variables | an ordered pair ( x , y ) that makes an equation true |
| Addition Property of Equality | When you add the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal. |
| Subtraction Property of Equality | When you subtract the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal. |
| Division Property of Equality | When you divide the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal. |
