Sources and Types of

TermDefinition
Case Law law established based on the outcome of former court cases
Common Law law based on custom and prior legal proceedings
Constitutional Law Laws relating to the interpretation of the Constitution
Precedent an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances.
Regulation a rule that a government agency makes to enforce a law
Statutory Law Law passed by the U.S. Congress or state legislatures
Civil Law law that deals with relationships between people
Criminal Law law that deals with crimes and the punishments associated with those crimes
Juvenile Law law that deals with people who are under the age of 18
Military Law laws that apply only to people in the military
