What did Heck Tate reveal when the prosecutor, Mr. Gilmer, questioned him? tha.t Mayella was bruised and beaten, and she said Tom took advantage of her
When Atticus cross-examines Heck Tate, what is revealed? that Mayella was never taken to a doctor, and her bruises were on the right side of her face.
What did Mr. Ewell say on the stand? that he heard Mayella yell, saw Tom taking advantage of her from the window, and ran for the sheriff
During cross-examination, what did Atticus make Mr. Ewell do on the stand? Sign his name
Atticus had Tom Robinson show and talk about his arm, why? That Tom couldn't have committed the crime because his left arm is withered
When Bob Ewell exists the stand Jem says, "We've got him." Why is this an example of dramatic irony? because Jem thinks Atticus's case is won, but the reader knows it's not over yet
Why did Mayella get upset with Atticus when she was on the stand? because she thought Atticus was being rude to her, but he was just being polite.
According to Mayella, why was Tom Robinson in her house on that fateful evening? He was supposed to break up a piece of furniture for her.
What is tragic about Mayella's life? She spends her time taking care of seven siblings and a drunk father, plus she has no friends.
When does Scout realize that Tom didn't commit the crime? When she realizes that Tom's left arm is messed up in a way he couldn't do what its said he did.
How did Mayella react when Atticus told her to admit that Tom did not take advantage of her, and that it was her father that beat her? She said the jury would be a bunch of cowards if they did not convict Tom, and then she cried.
What happened to Tom Robinson's hand? It was torn apart by a cotton gin when he was a boy.
What is the tone of this chapter? Suspenseful
