| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| atom | smallest particle of an element, the building blocks of matter |
| element | pure substance, made out of one type of atom, can't be broken down into any other substances |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| periodic table | shows all of the elements on Earth, arranged in order of atomic number (number of protons) |
| atomic structure | protons, electrons, and neutrons |
| What is in the center of an atom? | the nucleus (protons and neutrons) |
| protons | positively charged, located in the nucleus with the neutrons |
| neutrons | no charge (neutral), located in the nucleus with the protons. |
| electrons | negative charge, orbit around the nucleus on outside shells (rings) |
| chemical formula | tells the number and types of atoms present in a given molecule/compound |
| element | a pure substance made out of only one type of atom; cannot be broken down |
| compound | contains two or more different types of elements that are chemically bonded together, ex: H2O |
| molecule | contains two or more different atoms that are bonded together; could be two of the same type of atom or different types, ex: O2 or H2O |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |
| atomic mass | the approximate number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom |
