Chemical Reactions

QuestionAnswer
chemical reaction The reaction of two or more chemicals (the reactants) to form new chemicals (the products).
precipitate A solid that emerges in a chemical reaction when liquids are mixed and chemically react.
endothermic A reaction that involves bond-breaking and energy (heat) is absorbed from the surroundings; temperature decreases.
exothermic A reaction that involves bond-formation and energy (heat) is released into the surroundings; temperature increases.
synthesis reaction Two or more substances/reactants combine to form a single substance/product. (A + B → AB)
decomposition reaction One substance/single reactant breaks down into two or more substances/products. (AB → A + B)
combustion reaction A rapid and high-energy reaction between a substance and oxygen, producing heat and light (fire & explosions).
single replacement reaction One element replaces another in a compound. (A + BC → AC + B)
double replacement reaction Elements in two different compounds switch places. (AB + CD → AD + CB)
catalyst A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction.
chemical equation A representation of a chemical reaction as an equation; shows reactants on the left of an arrow and products on the right. (ex: MgO + CaS → MgS + CaO)
reactants The starting substances in a chemical reaction.
products The new substances formed in a chemical reaction.
Law of Conservation of Matter The scientific law that states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.
balanced equation A chemical equation where the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides.
chemical bond The chemical connection between atoms. (ex: ionic and covalent)
compound Substance made from more than one different element.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
