plot series of events that move the story along
exposition provides background information, exposes the setting, the characters, and the basic information
inciting incident introduces the central conflict
rising action builds suspense- all the events leading up to the climax
conflict problem- struggle between opposing forces
external conflict a struggle between a character and some outside person or force
three types of external conflict 1. man vs man. 2. man vs nature 3. man vs society
internal conflict a struggle that occurs within a character's mind
climax the high point of suspense
resolution the outcome of the story
falling action all the events that happen after the climax
denouement any events that occur after the resolution
setting time and place of the action
characters people, animals, or objects who take part in the events
major character one on whom the story focuses
minor character plays only a small role in the story
round character one who is complex and multi-faceted (like a real person, changes)
flat character one who does not change in the course of a work
point of view perspective from which the story is told
limited describes what one character is seeing, thinking, or doing
first person pov uses the pronoun "i"
third person pov uses the pronouns "he, she, it"
omniscient describes what any character is seeing, thinking, or doing
theme general idea about life that the story communicates
author a person who writes a story
narrative a story
short story a short work of fiction
fiction comes from the writer's imagination
narrator the speaker or character who tells the story
first person narrator one who tells the story and participates in its action
third person narrator one who stands outside the action and speaks about it
