Terms to Know for Effective and Clear Writing
| Term | expresses the author's attitud |

| Rhetoric | the art of speaking or writing effectively. |
| Diction | choice of words, especially regarding correctness, clearness, or effectiveness. The diction should match the purpose or audience. |
| Syntax | the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences. Good Syntax. |
| Tone | expresses the author's attitude toward the subject. It can evoke any number of emotions and perspectives in the audience. Tone Words |
| Audience | to whom a reading, viewing, or speech is directed and intended. |
| Claim | to state something as true; can either be factual or a judgement. |
| Ethos (ethical appeal) | the speaker or writer appeals to the audience's trust by establishing his/her credibility or trustworthiness as a writer or speaker. |
| Pathos (emotional appeal) | the speaker or writer appeals to the audience's emotions; it makes them feel something that convinces them. |
| Logos (logical appeal) | the speaker or writer appeals to the audience's logic by constructing a well-reasoned argument. |
