Literary Terms

TermDefinition
Conceit a complex, extended metaphor that compares two very different things in a surprising way
Meter the rhythmic structure of a line of poetry, defined by the arrangement of accented and unaccented syllables
Dialect a form of language used by an author to represent the speech patterns of a specific region, culture, or community
Allusion a figure of speech that indirectly refers to a person, place, thing, or event to create an association with the work
Diction the words and phrases that an author, narrator, or character chooses to use
Apostrophe a literary device where a speaker addresses a person who is not present, or an inanimate object, idea, or being
Mood the general feeling or atmosphere that a piece of writing creates in the reader
Assonance the repetition of vowel sounds across a line of text or poetry
Satire literary genre uses a wide variety of literary techniques, such as exaggeration, humor, and irony
Imagery literary device that uses words to create mental images in the reader's mind, appealing to the five senses
Pun a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.
Irony the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Magic realism a literary and artistic style that incorporates magical or mythical elements into a realistic setting
